Insurance for some occupations in the mining industry has been difficult to obtain in the past, and even today the majority of insurers will refuse cover for some miners.

Insurance company AIA Australia have recently come to the party by offering cover for dozens of extra mining related occupations and increasing the maximum limits for a number of occupations which were already covered.

Qualified Mining Professionals

Qualified professionals doing less than 10% field work can take out Income Protection Insurance with no limit on the monthly benefit.

Occupations within this category include the following:

  • Chemical engineer
  • Engineer
  • Exploration Engineer
  • Geologist
  • Industrial Chemist [non hazardous]
  • Metallurgist
  • Mine Manager
  • Minerals Process Engineer
  • Quarry Manager

Qualified professionals who perform more than 10% of their work out in the field will be subject to slightly tight restrictions. There occupations include the following:

  • Chemical Engineer [non hazardous]
  • Engineer
  • Geologist
  • Metallurgist
  • OH&S Manager / Officer
  • Surveyor

Qualified Mining Staff

Increased monthly benefits have been made available to a large number of occupations involved in mining.
Workers with less than five years experience will be able to obtain cover up to $6,250 per month, whilst mine workers with more than five years experience will be able to cover themselves for up to $7,500 per month.

  • Assayer
  • Boilermaker [no off shore]
  • Carpenter
  • Chef
  • Clerk
  • Diesel fitter
  • Diesel mechanic
  • Draftsperson
  • Electrician
  • Electronic technician
  • Instrument technician
  • Laboratory technician
  • Maintenance planner [<10% fieldwork]
  • Maintenance superintendant [<20% manual]
  • Maintenance supervisor [<20% manual]
  • Mechanic
  • Mechanical fitter
  • Mobile plant supervisor [<20% manual]
  • OH&S Manager / Officer [<10% fieldwork]
  • Plumber
  • Trade supervisor [<20% manual]
  • Welder

Other Mining Staff

For other mine workers not listed in the above category there is still cover available.
Miners in this category can obtain Income Protection Insurance of up to $4,000 per month if they have less than five years experience, and up to $7,500 per month if they have over five years experience.
These occupations are as follows:

  • Bogger operator
  • Crane operator
  • Chemical engineer [hazardous materials]
  • Derrickman [no off shore]
  • Driller operator [no off shore]
  • Dump truck operator
  • Excavator operator
  • Haul pack driver/operator
  • Industrial chemist [hazardous material]
  • Jumbo operator
  • Kitchen worker
  • Labourer [no off shore]
  • Mill operator
  • Miner [no face work]
  • Pipeline supervisor [no off shore]
  • Quarry worker [no explosives]
  • Refinery supervisor [no off shore]
  • Surface worker
  • Tool pusher [no off shore]

As you can probably tell, some of these occupations also apply to the oil and gas industries which are also covered under this upgrade.
